The following article briefly looks at the recent investigations by the Department of Environment and Conservation on the impacts of urban planning on the environment.  The article states ‘According to the EPA, Perth’s development so far has in many ways been ad hoc, economically inefficient and environmentally destructive.’

An interim report has been prepared by the EPA to investigate issues associated with a growing population.   The report was prepared for the State Government.  But will it be considered and will anything really change?.   Planning legislation has never really tackled the relationship between built environment and the natural. Now we know the impact of this maybe there is an opportunity for legislation to break its current mold and incorporate some new ways to resolve the intertwining issues.  Urban sprawl certainly is profitable but what is the ultimate cost?

The interim report can be found here @ http://www.epa.wa.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx
